Hand-crafted sustainable Australian timber handles
continue the rare and specialty nature of the Kimono Collections
Classic handbag/purse.
Every handle is hand cut, sanded and stained by
Jamie Bell in Queensland, Australia. Jamie shares the Kimono
Collections philosophy of sustainable use of limited resources and has
materialised my design of handles that other woodworkers found too
difficult to ensure the structural integrity of.
Each handle has been created to feel beautiful to
hold - sensory perception is a critical element througout Kimono
Collections. Jamie helped me to ensure each handle was sanded and
rounded for a beautiful touch in a female hand. He then uses a
technique called 'Japaning' for the lacquering of the black handles. We
have worked together towards an intent of still showing the grain of
the Australian timber, while creating a sense of depth to the
blackening of the current designs of the Kimono Collections handbags.
We are experimenting with clear lacquered handles for Kimono
Collections' new limited range available in 2007.
Jamie guarentees his work and has spent countless
months ensuring the integrity of the wooden handles. Over time some of
the lacquering will begin to fade, particularly where they are held the
most frequently. I personally like the look and feel of the
'fingerprinting' on the wooden handles that occurs over time. For women
who prefer that their wooden handles remain pristine, we will give
guidance on the maintanence of your lacquering.
The wooden handles add even more rarity to the
Kimono Collections Bags, it is a resource fraught with challenges, but
we believe that the Uchikake wedding Kimono is worthy of the time, care
and patience it has taken to craft these two rare and original designs.
